Scours Prevention

Calf scours accounts for a major portion of financial losses to the producers. Scour outbreaks are typically associated with mud, slush, or bad weather. There are several different kinds of bacteria, virus, protozoa, yeast, and molds that will cause scours. Weather conditions are out of human control; however there are preventative management measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of contracting scours.

One way to help reduce the risk of scours is by trying to set an area for calving and keeping the area clean and dry, this will cut down the amount of pathogens that cause scours. Another way to help insure healthy calves is by providing the Cow/ heifer with proper nutrition in the last third of gestation. With proper nutrition it allows the cow to get a boost of nutrients improving her immune system. That boost in immune system will be passed to the calf in the colostrum, allowing the calf to have a stronger immune system.
