As we celebrate Beef Month this May, it's important to recognize the hardworking individuals who help bring high-quality beef to our tables. For those working in the livestock industry, it's more than just a job — it’s a passion and a commitment to supporting local communities and ensuring the longevity of Nebraska's farming and ranching traditions. In this feature, we’ll hear from Russ Vering, managing partner and owner of Central Plains Milling, who is deeply involved in supporting the beef industry and the local ranchers who are the backbone of our rural economy. From nutrition to community impact, Russ shares why the beef industry is not just essential to our state economy, but also to the fabric of our everyday lives.
Why are you proud to support the beef industry in your day to day role?Family farms and ranches have operated in Nebraska for generations. I value the impact they have on Nebraska communities. That is why I try every day to help them succeed in our local towns, counties, and state.
What role do you think livestock nutrition plays in the story of beef?
Today the topic is farm to table. At Central Plains Milling, we focus on bringing nutritional solutions to ranchers that are based on local nutritional information. We use the best local ingredients. It’s not one size fits all, We don’t talk fluff – we use sound and simple research that is proven and works. If we focus on the best balance for our herds, our beef will be healthy and wholesome.
Is there a moment or memory that sums up why Beef Month is meaningful to you?
Beef brings people together. I have had cows for many years of my life and my kids enjoyed calving in the spring and spending time with the small calves. It’s the most beautiful thing looking out in the pasture at sunrise with cows and calves on the horizon. I also have never met a rancher that wouldn’t help you or say hi. They are some of the best people on the planet.
How do you see the beef industry impacting your community or region?
The beef industry is an integral piece of thriving small towns in the Midwest. Rural communities thrive when there is a feedlot or cattle nearby. The commerce that a beef operation provides locally is huge. Inputs like hay, silage, corn, supplies, services and equipment create a local circular economy. Labor is another giant part to the success of an operation and it provides jobs to local communities.
If you could share one message with consumers during Beef Month, what would it be?
Food security is national security. We as a country are lucky to have nutritious beef produced in the USA. Sometimes we take that for granted. Support our beef industry and advocate for ranchers because they feed so many people around the world.
